Shooting Tips

Set your tripod up or pop your camera somewhere that there is a mixture of natural movement like clouds water or trees alongside something that contrasts with that scene such as moving cars, people running for work or a shot of someone jumping.

The process of creating this this will allow you to freeze the movement of the most active part of the image and leave some of the natural and more subtle movement unchanged.

This contrast of still/movement creates a surreal effect and Final Cut Pro X allows you to create this easily using its Freeze Frame and masking tools. In Le Sora’s tutorial you are guided through how to create a Freeze Frame to create a still image of part of your video that can then be masked back into the video using the Draw Mask tool. Both of these functions are editing tools that are definitely worth exploring. They can be used in lots of different instances like this and also to composite clips together in different ways or to create elaborate split screens (check out my video below).
